The Good Garden: Food Security For Kids is an educational program created by the education nonprofit One Hen, Inc.

One Hen (A Program of Boston Scores) creates educational programs that teach elementary school children about world issues and how they can make a difference. Our mission is to help children become global citizens who succeed in school and beyond and to marry that success to helping others, by instilling in them the values of financial responsibility, personal initiative, global awareness and giving back.

One Hen equips educators with interactive resources that bring global issues into the classroom and allow children to learn, play and make a difference for others and themselves.

Resources for each program include a book, website and teaching modules, integrated into classroom teaching or run as stand-alone after-school, club or summer enrichment curriculum. One Hen creates programs for children in grades K-12, with an emphasis on grades 4 – 6.

The Good Garden: Food Security For Kids enrichment program introduces kids to the concept of food security and what they can do about the global food crisis through a picture book The Good Garden: How One Family Went From Hunger to Having Enough, this website www.thegoodgarden.org, and Maria’s Garden: Food Security for Kids teaching modules.

One Hen: Microfinance for Kids, the first enrichment program of One Hen, Inc. introduces children to microfinance and entrepreneurship through award winning picture book One Hen: How One Small Loan Made a Big Difference, website www.onehen.org, and Kojo’s Market: Microfinance for Kids teaching modules.

Schools and organizations in the US, UK, Canada and Ghana are implementing One Hen programs. In the US, One Hen works with schools, clubs and education partners who run multisite afterschool and summer program such as BELL national in face-to-face programs in New York, Boston, Baltimore, Augusta, Detroit, Charlotte and San Francisco. In addition, teachers in 50 states and 142 countries self-serve by downloading lesson plans from our websites and using One Hen resources in their teaching.

Maria's Story Presentation

Maria's Story is an engaging way to introduce The Good Garden message to your school or organization. Amma Sefa-Dedeh, One Hen Executive Director, personally tells the story of Maria, a girl from Honduras ...

Ms. Sefa-Dedeh's presentation includes The Good Garden reading combined with an interactive media presentation and can include additional activities depending on the needs of the organization. Presentation can be designed as one to three hour or full day programs and can be modified to address K-8th grade students as well as to incorporate Good Garden teacher training.
